Ou tinte la clochette des charmeurs
I love opera. I have for a long time. I’ve been watching clips on YouTube from some of my favorite arias and favorite sopranos, and since I have a spiffy new YouTube plugin, I’m going to slap some up here.
Il dolce suono, from Lucia di Lammermoor, soprano Anna Netrebko
Ah! je ris de me voir si belle, from Faust, soprano Angela Gheorghiu
Welche Wonne, welche Lust, from Die Entführung aus dem Serail, soprano Lucia Popp
Ruhe sanft, from Zaide, soprano Lucia Popp (again, because I love her, and how she sings this aria)
Der Hölle Rache, from Die Zauberflöte, soprano Sumi Jo (possibly my all-time favorite aria)
Ach, ich fühl’s, from Die Zauberflöte, soprano Elisabeth Grummer
Où va la jeune indoue, from Lakmé, soprano Lily Pons
Les oiseaux dans la charmille, from Les Contes D’Hoffman, soprano Sumi Jo (I love her)
Barcarolle, from Les Contes D’Hoffman, soprano Anna Netrebko and mezzo Elina Garanca
Addio del passato, from La Traviata, soprano Renata Tebaldi
Ka ipo i ke aka pua aniani
There’s nothing like traditional Hawaiian music for expressing flowery love. The emotional impact of the words is stronger than English, the sentiments more tender.
- `Auhea iho nei o Leialoha
- Ku`u hoa i ka nani a`o nâ pua
- Eia mai au `o suipa lilo
- Ka ipo i ke aka pua aniani
- He aniani wale `o hâli`a loko
- Nowelo mao `ole i ka pu`uwai
Nâ wai nô `oe e a pakele aku
I ka wai o ka pânini pua keaHa`ina `ia mai ana ka puana
Ku`u ipo i ka nani a`o nâ pua
John Almeida wrote those words, and their poetry is just haunting.
A Very Potter Earworm
I get earworms a lot. Music stuck in my head that won’t come out, lasting days or weeks. Usually it means that I listen to the song over and over to try to get it out of my head, and generally obsess over the music. Recently, as you may have noticed, it’s been Mon Amant de St-Jean. This has been overtaken now by the Very Potter Musical. I’ve been singing it around the house a lot, and seeing Half-Blood Prince Tuesday night kept making VPM references pop into my head (“My dad that’s dead, my father’s dead, I have a dead father.”). My kids are starting to request their favorites, usually Ginny’s Song. “Sing the guinea pig again!” and then they laugh and say “You want to bring me to Canada?”
Apparently a soundtrack is going to be available soon, so I can listen to the songs without playing the entire video on my iPod, which will be fun, although I love watching the whole thing over and over. And I’ll be singing along in the kitchen going “Haaaaaaaaaarry!” haha.
