I won a S.H.O.P. tote from Calypso Studios. I never win stuff, so I was pretty excited about this. The tote is nylon, and quality is good, though there’s several threads hanging. If they’re handmade though, then I’m not gonna hate, cause I sew too and I know it’s hard to catch all the threads sometimes. It’s a nice shade of green with the logos “Be kind to the Earth” and “Acts of Kindness” and a little blue bird singing hearts on a tree. Very cute in a cutesy way, but not cloyingly so, so I will no doubt use this. Kind of sad I didn’t get the “Be kind to the ocean” one though, that’s really very me, as you could probably tell if you saw all the Surfrider stickers on my cars over the years.
I would love to buy more from them, but I think they’re a little pricy for me. Spending $20 plus shipping for three totes seems silly when I can pick up a reusable shopping bag at any store for $1-2, and usually already have (I have 7 or 8 Walmart bags, a Farm Fresh bag, a Joann’s bag, a Target bag, and a pair of Bloom bags). And I sew so I could potentially make a bag for less than this. But I like that they come in a carrying case for the three bags, cause my trunk is either full of store bags that stop folding nicely after a dozen uses or scattered bags all scrunches up in a pile. Not cute. Again, I could make something to fix that, but what I usually do is stuff all the other bags inside a Walmart bag. And I like that they roll up and have a little strap that snaps around them to hold them shut.
They’re large and roomy – 17″ by 19″. This bag could hold some serious shopping in it, though I’m not sure how much weight this fabric could take. It says up to 20lbs but I would be careful past 10. Most of what I buy weighs less that that, though. And they do have some very adorable prints – I really like this one by Andrea Tachiera, and this one by Robin Roderick, but there’s a lot of options so I’m sure there’s something for everyone.
I do like that this is a local company – well, nearly so, it’s based about 90 miles from me. I’m very tempted to buy the sealife ones for my mother, who would love them. And really, $20 for three totes isn’t a bad price to support local business and artists. Wouldn’t they make a cute Mother’s Day gift? Think of all the quilting fabric my mom could fit in one of those. Think of all the fabric I could fit in one of those.
This is how I talk myself into things. Okay, let’s all go buy some tote bags now.
