What I’m Watching

Or have been watching.

“Sherlock”, the new BBC series. It was good, I enjoyed it very much. Sherlock portrayed as a sociopath with entertaining eccentricities was fun – I particularly loved when he was watching daytime tv. Watson was well-cast. Overall the move to the 21st century worked quite well.

“The Young Victoria”, the movie about young Queen Victoria. I’ve been wanting to see this for ages, so I almost leaped for joy when I saw it at Redbox. The costumes are beautiful, the actors playing Victoria and Albert both well-cast and talented, and the story was lovely. Highly enjoyable movie. Squee-worthy love scenes, in that corsets and petticoats kind of way, which I love. Lots of lovely actors: Paul Bettany (who I often recognize by his voice first, because hair and makeup often make him look so very different), Jim Broadbent, Mark Strong, Miranda Richardson, Harriet Walter. They do gloss over historical events, in the way film and tv always does, and invent one in particular, but I still really enjoyed it.

“Warehouse 13″ on the SciFi channel (I’m sorry, I refuse to use their ridiculous new misspelled name). Quite like this show. My mother is really into it, and I’ve caught a few episodes now. May have to go back and watch from the beginning.

Zahi Hawass’s “reality” show. This one cracks me up. He’s a well-known dickhead among archaeologists, and it’s hilarious to see him faking archaeology (seriously, no one believes you popped that out of the ground so easily, and by the way, you’d be wearing gloves if that were real) and yelling at fake grad students (who all have acting credits on IMDb) such gems as “You will never work for me again!” The fake grad students ask the dumbest-ass questions. The whole thing is just so very stupid that I think it’s awesome. The sheer weight of epic fail tips over into win, much like the Black Pearl righting itself to emerge from Davy Jones’ Locker.

The other thing that’s been on our tv (constantly) is the original Star Wars trilogy, which my kids are currently obsessed with, especially the AT-ATs, AT-STs, the Battle for Hoth, the Battle for Endor, exploding Death Stars, exploding AT-ATs/AT-STs, exploding X-wings, exploding speeders, and the Ewoks. They lay in their tauntaun sleeping bag (Husband’s bestie gave it to him) and watch. Over and over and over. I’m so tired of hearing about AT-ATs, y’all. And so tired of being lectured about Darth Vader. “He Luke’s dad, but now he a bad guy. He used to be a good guy, but then he was angry and did bad things, and now he on the Dark side of the Force.” There are Lego Jedi dying in my kitchen (Hoth) as we speak. Someone please make it stop.

Malgré plusieurs années…

So I watched L’auberge espagnole tonight. And it was lovely. It was very French, and I love that about it. It had some very funny parts, but mostly it was just interesting. Extremely watchable. Really loved the main character, Xavier. Audrey Tautou was overbilled on the DVD cover, but the scenes she was in were excellent. Whole thing was excellent, honestly. I highly recommend watching it.

I put the subtitles on, figuring it had been so long since I watched a movie in French, I wouldn’t understand much of it. But I did. More than I thought I would. The longer the movie went, the easier I found it to understand and the less I glanced down at the subtitles (except for the parts in Spanish, which I do not speak). It was very encouraging. Je n’ai pas parlé français depuis plusieurs années, mais je me rapelle plus que j’ai craint. Je suis un peu rouillée, mais c’est pas mal. I knew my reading French was still fairly fluent, but my speaking and listening is not what it once was. I majored in French my first two years at BYU, then turned it into my minor when I switched to archaeology. I still read novels in French, for fun, but I don’t get much opportunity for conversational French these days.

And I have to say, it’s a relief to have a laptop with a number pad so I can do alt code accents again. Fabuleux.

It’s so hard to find good help these days

I need a babysitter.

One that’s reliable. I’m tired of people who flake out at the last minute. Now, I’m a Pisces, and I understand that sometimes flakiness happens, but dammit, if you said you were going to babysit my kids on a certain date at a certain time, then you forget and make plans to go to dinner with your friends instead, it’s rude to NOT TELL ME THIS until an hour before you’re supposed to be here and only because I called you to ask when you’d be here. Shit. Ditch your friends, not me. Freakin’ cousins.

There’s a teenager down the street from me. She was perfect for a while there, cause she could just walk over and walk home later. Very nice. Two doors down. Then her family moved away for a while, inexplicably. Now they’re back, and I’ve asked her to sit but she’s busy whenever I’ve needed someone.

So what this amounts to is that I still haven’t seen Star Trek, or Wolverine, and I’m worried about how I’m going to go see Harry Potter, cause you KNOW I’m not going to miss that one. I don’t mind hitting Wolverine at the dollar theater, if I can find a freakin’ sitter, but I really wanted to see Star Trek.

DH says maybe I can wait to see Harry Potter until Hawaii so we can go see it together. Um, no. I’m seeing it on opening night, thank you. I can’t wait three weeks to see it. Nope. We’ll have to find a babysitter in Honolulu, I guess.

Upcoming Movies

What do you know, there’s actually movies this summer that I want to see. That hasn’t happened for some time, I’ve felt pretty apathetic toward movies for about the last year and a half ish.

So for my own personal edification, I’m going to make a list to keep track of when things are opening that I want to go see.

May 1: Wolverine – I know, it’s been leaked to the web, but I plan to wait for the theater. Hugh Jackman with rippling muscles? Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth? What’s not to love?

May 8: Star Trek – Yes, I like Star Trek. Don’t judge me while I get my geek on. This one looks good. Quinto as Spock? I love it.

June 19: Year One – Seems like Mel Brooks’ History of the World meets Jack Black meets 10,000 BC, and I’m down with that. Might just rent this one, though.

June 26: Cheri – Looks interestingly different. Nice to see Michelle Pfeiffer back in the world of tinsel again.

July 3: Public Enemies – I fully admit that I want to see this only to drool over Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. At some point we all have to accept ourselves.

July 15: Half-Blood Prince – ‘Nuff said.

July 24: The Ugly Truth -I like romantic comedies. Cheesy, yes, but still fun. And I love Gerard Butler with a passion that overcomes my dislike of Katherine Heigl (post her assy comments about the Grey’s writers, though she may have been punished enough by the Dead Denny storyline, we shall see).

So what are you going to see this summer?
